Great Hardware, Outdated App

It’s hard to believe that in 2025, the August Home app still doesn’t support dark mode. Every time I open it at night, it feels like a flashlight to the face. For an app that’s all about modern smart home convenience, missing this basic feature just feels lazy. Great hardware, but the software experience is stuck in 2018.

WHY!!!!!!!!

It used to be great when I could have lock access on the main screen of my iPhone. It would’ve showed me the three of my locks together, and I could’ve opened one with a quick touch. A while back iPhone iOS updated and August didn’t want to keep with the times. Now these locks are useless, the app is pointless and I’m going back to just using a formal key because it doesn’t take me 45sec of fumbling through my phone to get a lock open.

Company too lazy to update the widget for IOS 18

Goo boy. The app designers are truly awful. The most useful piece of this tech is the IOS widget. 60% of the time, the Auto Unlock doesn’t work or takes too long. Since this company failed to update their widget to work with IOS18, I can no longer just swipe over on my phone and unlock. I need to remember the name of the app, then search for it, then go through like 2-3 clicks before I can unlock the door (BTW, 99% of people only have one smart lock. Why in gods name do we have to do an extra click through a list of locks to get into the interface for their own lock? The extra click should be to CHANGE the lock viewed, you knuckleheads). It’s more of a hassle than using a physical key. If I sound deeply annoyed it’s because I am. App/UI designers, do better. Also, after 5 years the mechanism has broken and the lock won’t open by hand or by app. So there’s that.

Return it while you can

No battery health diagnostics, loss of widgets and no intention of updating to do so, poor functionality when it comes to connecting and opening and locking (which is the whole purpose), and in general, the company has no interest in making the app or product any better. Just return the smart lock and get some other lock. It’s really not worth it, seriously.

No widget

This lock needs to have a widget to lock and unlock. HomeKit widget doesn’t work either and keeps saying no response. One star due to the lack of the widget otherwise great smart lock

No more Widget?

Why are you refusing to add a widget for the app? Why do you force me to scroll to find and open the app? You had a widget; why did you take it away?

Annoying and unsafe

My Airbnb host uses this and I also had to use this as a guest. It only allows me to connect via Bluetooth whereas my host can unlock from anywhere via WiFi! I feel very unsafe. Needles to say, it also fails to connect via my Bluetooth. I feel like I’m trapped in this scam.

Can’t set up my locks

I have multiple locks and moved and I couldn’t set up any of them so I figured they were just too old so I bought another wifi smart lock and the app just crashes whenever it’s searching for my devices and I’m getting tired of it because I want to use my locks.

Fairly good app but no more widgets

*Update 2/28/25 Took away another star because: Still. No. Widgets. Customers are talking to you, please listen before customers start walking.* This app worked well for me until I updated my phone to iOS 18 and the super convenient and helpful widgets disappeared. Please update software to bring back the widgets.

4 years of use, still lots of hiccups

I wish there was a way to give long-term tenants access to “owner” features like getting low battery notifications/emails and allowing them to add guests to use the lock (with owner approval). There should be an option for them to do this while not being able to remove the master owner of the lock but still give the tenants flexibility to reap benefits of a smart-lock.

Keeps Removing HomeKit

Have been using my lock and app for years with hardly any problems until recently. Lately, I have been getting “no response” in the Home app. When I check the August app, it seems the app/lock has been removing my HomeKit connection. Shows that I have to enable HomeKit again. Please fix.

Couldn't even get the Apple login to work. I bailed. Too much hassle as a guest.

Poor development - missing widget

As many others have said in reviews, this app is long overdue for an update that restores widget functionality. The developer blames Apple on their website. This is unprofessional. It is the app developers responsibility to stay current with major iOS releases, as Apple gives plenty of notice of deprecations. Please update the app to restore widget functionality.

Terrible app

Cannot reset passwords. Doesn’t load numpad to complete text verification on reset. Cannot paste from messages. Buggy. Stuck.

Battery Eater

My August lock keeps eating my batteries. I get a notification that the batteries need to be replaced. I put in fresh batteries and 2 day’s later I get another notification that the battery’s need replacing. I then test the batteries and they are fine. So it might be a software glitch that needs to be addressed. Also you need to put a battery level indicator in the app. Thanx.

UPDATE FOR 2025. STILL ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. Wish I could rate 1 star again. I’ve never taken the time to review an app before until now. Because I haven’t been able to unlock my own house in weeks because of their disastrous portal setup. So annoyed this is what we chose to lock our house when I can no longer sign in or get the correct support

No widget

If only they had some devs that could make a widget that works on a current OS.

Makes me sign in once day

Every day, it makes me sign in and enter a passcode it texts me despite never logging out. Really takes the convenience out of it.

HomeKit setup Crashes app

After years of mostly seemless working, one of my locks started being unresponsive in HomeKit but not August app. I removed the accessory from HomeKit but current version of app crashes when trying to enable HomeKit for lock.

No widget Lock Screen support after iOS 18

After iOS 18 they removed the widget to unlock from your Lock Screen. August just blames Apple on their website. Saying legacy widgets are not supported. You are a “smart” technology manufacturer. Write new code and update your “smart” technology!!! Pathetic. Can not recommend.

Terrible app

Can’t log in, can’t reset password, can’t get in touch with online on the phone and they keep asking how they’re doing (3x)! They’re terrible! Do not trust them with your security or anything. Bad tech all around.

Still no widget?

iOS 18 was released almost 4 months ago, anybody still at August or is this a company just treading water?

I am so sorry excited about my August replacement.

My August lock has not lived up to its reviews or potential. Do not be fooled. This lock has 3 big flaws. 1. The batteries do not last as long as other locks. My Schlage i had in the past lasted about a year and I used the locked multiple times per day. 2. Has never worked with Apple HomeKit / Siri no matter how many times you reset it, reset Apple homes, etc. This is the most incompatible smart lock with Apple ecosystem ever. Oh, the iOS app works but “Hey Siri, lock front door” is a pipe dream. 3. The overall experience has been just poor. I am so happy I found Schlage on discount for black Friday/ cyber Monday and it was the right finish. If you ever want a smart lock to work flawlessly with HomeKit / Siri…look past August and go directly to Schlage. August, I told you 2.5 years ago that you need to fix the issues for Apple users and you ignored us, so BYE BYE…..I love my new Schlage lock….it was quickly setup with HomeKit…..amazing, but knew it would based on experience.

Widget in iOS 18 is missing

The widget is now completely unavailable in iOS 18. This makes the application slower and more cumbersome to use everyday. They have been ignoring the widget for years and relying on the Legacy Widget that’s now deprecated. And they blame Apple in their KB article for the loss of functionality.

I LOVE my August lock and that this app allows me to have my door unlock when I walk up to it without even getting my phone out of my pocket. It's amazing. But the app leaves much to be desired. It is frequently updated but no features are ever added and every other time it's updated it stops working well from my watch. It also used to have a legacy widget that kept working until ios 18. Now it's much more annoying to unlock my door manually as I can't just swipe right and tap unlock. I have to open the app, tap a few times waiting for it to connect, etc.

No PIN is a problem

We have August locks and ADT home security. With the ADT app, I had the option and chose to add a PIN (not FaceID) that is required to use the app. How has August not added this feature? Theft of phones at gunpoint while demanding a PIN is a thing. It actually happens. If someone has my phone and phone PIN, they can access my home. It’s been three years with August, and they still haven’t added an app-specific PIN for you know: added security. It’s inane to me.

Rarely unlocks on approach, now widget is gone. Inconvenient!

Rarely does my August smart lock - which we have had for about 5 years now - unlock when I approach via Bluetooth connection, as some others have mentioned. Despite the irritation at this (after all, that was a major appeal of a Bluetooth lock), I kept the widget handy for a 2-click phone unlock. Now the latest iPhone update has put that out of reach as well. The explanation is that August has not invested in development to update their widget to new standards which have been available for many releases. So now when my hands are full of groceries and a small child and my lock won’t trigger from my pocket, I’ve got to take out my phone, unlock it, bring up the August app, click the home button and THEN unlock the house door. First-world problems I know, but I would make a different purchase if I were in the market now.

Don’t Get This Lock

I’ve had the August lock for 6 years, has worked perfectly since about 4 months ago, now it disconnects from HomeKit everyday. So if you are good with just going through the August app (meaning, you want zero functionality with HomeKit, Shortcuts, or just you iPhone base software in general, then fine, great lock. But if you expect that aforementioned functionality, very simple, don’t buy it. Once I find another lock option I will share it here.

No Widget with iOS 18

I've been using August smart lock for years and the widget was very convenient to use instead of having to open the app and select the lock to unlock. I've been patiently waiting for them to resolve this issue and bring the widget back in iOS 18, but it's like they don't even care. I reached out to their support and they literally said "we don't have an estimated date in which widgets will be added back". This is unacceptable. It may be time to try other smart lock companies

August is not what is used to be

August used to my favorite smart lock now it’s in the bottom list. After they removed the widget it’s difficult to use and my WiFi connection is constantly lose its connection. Have to reset it every time. It might to time to depart from what was once my favorite smart lock.

Still no widget, time to look door a new lock solution

Since the release of ios18. There’s been multiple app updates but widget functionality still has not been restored. To make matters worse, to unlock/lock in the app requires additional authorization. Why?? At least remove that requirement so it’ll operate somewhat like the widget. After all the phone is already unlocked to be able to access the app. It’s redundant. If y’all gonna be lazy release or give me the code and I’ll update it for you! For free!! My goodness!

Inconsistent and never got better.

It’s good when it works. I have now installed across multiple locks and multiple properties. Constant loss of signal both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. All properties have no other Wi-Fi or Bluetooth issues. The app is probably the worst feature. Very cumbersome to choose lock on app. Should just be a dashboard showing multiple locks. Sometimes I just stand outside the door and the app shows unlocked but nothing happens. I regret keep believing this company will fix these issues because each update does nothing.

Easy to use

I installed this myself, and was relatively easy to do so. It’s a little bulky than I would usually expect for a lock, but it makes sense, given the motor that opens it. I would like to see the mobile app at a feature that allows one to see the battery level. I do appreciate that I get warnings when the battery level is “critically low”, but I would like to see the battery charge level approximately before it becomes “”critical”

Bring back the widget

I’m not even on iOS 18, yet the widget stopped working! This is unacceptable!

This app is a lifesaver

Oh my God, this is the best app ever. It is so useful now I don’t have to hold keys. This is a lifesaver.

Works well enough

My main gripe is that I have 1 lock. Yet every time I have to first select my home before I can lock or unlock the door. If I only have 1 lock WHY DO I HAVE TO SELECT THE HOME FIRST?!?
